Open access policy

BIR|Open is the British Institute of Radiology's open access option for authors of accepted articles in BJR, BJR | Case reports, BJR | Open or DMFR.

BJR and DMFR operate a hybrid open access model

Upon acceptance of their article BJR and DMFR authors can opt for BIR|Open, allowing unrestricted access to the online version of their article upon receipt of the Article Processing Charge (APC).

The British Institute of Radiology is committed to the dissemination and re-use of research outputs in a manner that is flexible to the requirements of our authors. As such, BJR and DMFR authors wishing to opt for BIR|Open can choose to publish their article open access under one of the following licences:

Authors who published their article on an open-access basis in BJR or DMFR before 20 August 2014 will have their work published under either a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 (CC BY 3.0) licence or a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial 3.0 (CC BY NC 3.0) licence. Please consult the final version of your article hosted on our website for specific licence details which apply to your work.

Note that authors who do not wish for their articles to be published via an open access model will not be reqired to pay an APC.

BJR and DMFR

To give BJR and DMFR authors the maximum flexibility to comply with funding requirements we offer the option of two Creative Commons Licences, the CC BY 4.0 and CC BY NC 4.0 Please ensure you check which type of licence is mandated by your funder. The charges for each licence are as follows:

This licence lets others distribute, change and build upon your work, even for commercial gain. They must credit you for the original.

In considering our BIR|Open option, authors should be aware that some articles are already free to access upon publication:

Open Access waivers

To support research and researchers in lower-income countries, the British Institute of Radiology operates a waiver scheme allowing authors to publish their research in BJR|Case reports and BJR|Open without incurring the usual article processing charge (APC). Authors wishing to request a waiver will be given the opportunity to do so during article processing. Authors’ ability to pay APCs does not influence publication decisions, as charges are not levied until after an article is accepted.
